Snapshot

As the Corporate Communications Manager you will be responsible for the development and execution of the company’s external communications strategy, to help achieve Google DeepMind’s research and impact goals.  Whilst leading a team, you’ll also be an influential partner to senior leadership, continually adapting to changing priorities and external context.

This role is pivotal in helping develop, shape, and communicate the Google DeepMind story to all audiences as we advance towards our mission to “solving intelligence to advance science and benefit humanity”!

The Role

Reporting to the Head of Communications, you will help bring Google DeepMind’s voice and narrative to stakeholders through the development of external communications and engagements across a variety of platforms. This role will collaborate with executives’ offices, the Internal Communications team, the Public Policy team, the Events team, as well as other partners and leaders across the organisation and Google to drive strategy development and tactical program execution.

Key responsibilities:

Strategy & execution 

  • Execute  the corporate communications strategy, thinking holistically about external communications activity including an integrated executive communications plan. 
  • Lead alignment of external messaging across all audiences and serve as a primary communications point of contact and support for the business. 
  • Develop and/or oversee development of a variety of materials from inception to finished product. There will be a heavy focus on elevating engagement and activation on executive and public policy communications.  
  • Research new topics and develop creative ways to share stories that resonate with different individuals, across various channels.
  • Simplify and translate Google DeepMind's mission, values, company progress and performance, and industry trends into coherent stories and messages.
  • Stay current on relevant industry, economic, social, and governmental topics and issues that should be reflected in external communications.

Leadership & management

  • Lead the Corporate Communications team, maximising performance through effective line management and leadership. 
  • Build an inclusive and engaging team environment by role modelling inclusive and respectful behaviours and taking action to ensure high levels of engagement and behaviour that aligns with company values.
  • Plan and prioritise activities and workloads across the team to accelerate individual and collective contribution to Google DeepMind’s mission.
  • Set goals and provide feedback to team members to maximise their capabilities in support of their personal development and Google DeepMind’s mission.

Stakeholder management

  • Build positive relationships with colleagues and leaders across Google DeepMind, acting as a trusted advisor.
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration with key partners, such as the internal communications team and communications teams across Google/Alphabet.
  • Support the management of an external agency roster including negotiating budgets and contract renewals.

About You

In order to set you up for success in this role, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • Experience leading a core function or team within a communications or corporate affairs organisation.
  • Developing trusted C-suite relationships and tangibly positioning a company with an intentional proactive strategy.
  • Delivering impactful communications that increase awareness and simplify technical information in a way that provides clarity to diverse audiences.
  • Strategic and proactive thinker with ability to “see the big picture” and connect the dots across a matrixed organisation with diverse stakeholders to create thoughtful, coordinated communication plans.
  • Confidence to influence and advise on communication best practices and implementing communication strategies to support company priorities.
  • Ability to work at both the strategic and tactical levels - no job is too big or too small. 
  • Adaptable to change, you are a team player and can balance multiple competing priorities while remaining flexible and creative. 
  • Passionate storyteller with experience across all mediums.
  • Clear writing style and voice, with excellent writing, editing and creative development skills.
  • Able to influence “up and down” to achieve project objectives.
  • Ability to prioritise and multitask in shifting and sometimes ambiguous environments, take initiative and act independently, and produce high quality work under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain discretion and appropriately handle confidential information.

Preferred experience:

  • Experience running an external/corporate communications function.
  • Experience in policy communications, external executive engagements/executive communications and social media thought leadership.
  • Experience in both start-up and large corporations..
  • Knowledgeable and engaged in AI and emerging technologies. 
  • Ability to translate highly technical and scientific language into content that resonates with all audiences.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $200,000 - $296,000 + bonus + benefits. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
